History of the Downtown Revitalization Program

In October 2008, the Harriston Downtown Revitalization Committee (DRC) was formed with the purpose of revitalizing Harriston's downtown business core. The DRC is following the internationally recognized Main Street Four Point Approach which focuses on:

·        Organization/Collaboration
·        Promotion/Marketing
·        Design
·        Economic Development

The DRC is a sub-committee of the Town of Minto Economic Development & Planning Committee and is comprised of residents, business people and Town staff.

Based on the extensive analysis of the Harriston Downtown Market Analysis Information the Harriston DRC has created an action plan and market position statement, which is as follows:

Harriston's Downtown is located at the intersection of two major highways providing access to thousands of customers every day. With a strong service and convenience cluster the downtown is able to meet the needs of local residents and tourists. Downtown Harriston is centred on the Maitland River and is home to a wealth of cultural assets including the Heritage Town Hall Theatre and Carnegie Library, which houses a heritage art gallery. Both of these venues offer residents and visitors access to a variety of arts and culture experiences.
